The largest team at Sigicom is our Development team. The team consists of expertise in hardware, software, firmware and test. Together, the team forms a strong force: developing, designing and advancing environment monitoring technology.
Jiaying Du joined Sigicom’s headquarters in Stockholm in 2022. With a PhD degree of engineering in embedded systems, and several research publications in sensor signal processing, Jiaying found the perfect role at Sigicom as a Development Engineer.
In addition to her role at Sigicom, Jiaying is active in writer’s groups at SIS, the Swedish Institute for Standards, developing new Swedish standards for vibration and shock monitoring, contributing her expertise in signal processing.
Hi, Jiaying! Could you describe what you do as a Development Engineer at Sigicom?
– I’m part of the firmware team, focusing on embedded firmware and signal processing. I implement low-level hardware integration for our systems, including accelerometers, sensor interfaces, and displays, as well as system-level components such as time synchronization, connectivity, and user interfaces. I develop key features such as sensor check and trigger-on-resultant. I design and optimize signal-processing algorithms, including filter design, frequency analysis, and spectrum computation, to deliver reliable, standards-compliant data across firmware and backend systems. When our support/sales team needs technical expertise for customer requests, I’m happy to assist there as well.
Why are standards so important in environmental monitoring?
– Standards are extremely important. Different countries and markets have different standards. Depending on how those standards are defined, we need to implement different features and signal processing. This is especially important for Sigicom, since we operate in multiple markets, to ensure that customers can make the right decisions based on reliable data.
What do you like most about working at Sigicom?
– I really enjoy the workplace and working with my colleagues. Signal processing and embedded systems are my main interests, and I’m very happy to be able to work with that here. What drives me most is building monitoring systems that deliver reliable and trustworthy data.
What would you say to someone who is interested in joining Sigicom’s Development team?
– We have a great development environment and a strong team with diverse experiences, where you can learn from each other and grow. The development organization is well structured, and communication is open. I really appreciate that you’re encouraged to share your insights and express your needs.
Jiaying explains signal processing:
“Signal processing is central to reliable monitoring systems. Raw measurements, such as vibration, sound, or pressure, must be analyzed using appropriate filtering, weighting, spectral analysis, and aggregation to extract the quantities defined by standards. The choice and implementation of these signal analysis methods determine whether results are meaningful, comparable, and standards compliant. Even small differences in algorithms or parameter settings can lead to significant deviations, especially when meeting multiple national and international standards. Signal processing in embedded firmware also involves developing real-time algorithms, balancing memory usage and computational efficiency, and ensuring both timing and signal fidelity.”
