| Noise Monitoring Noise can be measured in many ways and a rigid standard is not available. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has formulated environmental quality standards for Swedish authorities which are also useful in private enterprises. This authority, the Swedish EPA, has also formulated advice on how to measure noise and how to protect humans as well as precautionary measures. Directive 2004:15 outlines a framework for measurement of noise levels close to construction areas. Recommendations for housing, hospitals and schools can also be found at http://www.naturvardsverket.se/ and http://www.internat.naturvardsverket.se/ INFRA helps a lot! With Sigicom´s INFRA system sound can be measured from 20 to 135 dB in four measurement ranges. Weather parameters can be measured simultaneously and compensation can be made instantly. This is facilitated by the "Plug and Measure" bus system. All sensors have the same connectors whether you use geophones, microphones, noise meters, inclination or wind meters. INFRA lets you check all work sites where it is considered that employees may be exposed to excessive noise. The cost of setting up a monitoring system is far below the cost of injuries and penalties after the damage is done. If noise levels at the work place are measured, it will be much easier to contain the human risk factors caused by excessive noise, as well as the economic risk arising from potential fines for breech of regulations. Knowledge and understanding of noise regulations and the ability to use the correct measuring equipment, to record and interpret the results obtained in accordance with the regulations and to make suitable and appropriate recommendations, are of great value. |
