Rock blasting is all more often made in head settlements. This means big damage risk on buildings, computers, switchboards, optic fibre, GSM base stations and other sensitive equipment. Vibrations caused by blasting activities can cause expensive damages.
Blasting near existing settlement with sensitive equipment is necessary in order to build foundations for houses, tunnels, roads and railways or to put tubes in rocks. At explosion in tunnels, in mines or for quarries, the air shock waves can give damages also on a relatively long distance.

Both the blaster and the supervisor needs to measure
As the company or person who is responsible for the blasting work can become responsible for damages is it important to know exactly how buildings and equipment have been influenced. If the measurement reports show that nothing inappropriate has happened, requirements on repairing crevices in house fronts or broken instruments, can be repudiated directly.
Supervising authorities are sometime motivated to set up own measurements in order to check that the decided conditions are followed and also to inform the general public about what is happening.
